Welcome to Lanark Highlands. A community that operates one of the last riverside dumps in Canada.
The Middleville Waste Site is located on the banks of the Clyde River in otherwise picturesque rural Eastern Ontario within one hour of the Nation’s Capital.
Almost all riverside dumps in Ontario were closed and rehabilitated back in the 1970's when it was first realized how damaging these sites are. Meanwhile, Lanark Highlands is now embarking upon a major expansion of its riverside dump.
While other municipalities are facing costly cleanups of their riverside dumps, Lanark Highlands is pushing the active fill area of its dump even closer to the river. This in a municipality that operates no fewer than 5 other waste sites -- Lanark Highlands doesn’t even need this site yet insists that it is a ‘valuable asset’.
The continued operation of this dump is a serious impediment to the economic development, growth, and prosperity of Lanark Highlands. A riverside dump represents a huge potential liability for the township and sends a signal of municipal mismanagement and disregard for the environment to potential investors, tourists, and others interested in a future in Lanark Highlands.
The Middleville Waste Site must not be allowed to expand closer to the river. Please support efforts to halt this expansion.
